Capitol Hill

Development of Capitol Hill began in the late 19th-century amid an argument over land ownership. In 1864, a parcel of land on a barren hill was donated to the state of Colorado for construction of the state capitol. When several years passed and construction on the site still hadn’t begun, the former owner of the land commenced a legal battle to resume ownership of the property. The state eventually won by judgment of the U.S. Supreme Court. Construction on the site began in the 1880s.

At about the same time, a landowner named A.W. Tabor built the famous Tabor Grand Opera House that once stood at the intersection of 16th and Curtis. This, along with the construction of the new state capitol, prompted residential and commercial growth of this section of the city. Since then, greater Capitol Hill has experienced alternating times of growth and periods of contraction. In the early years, the community was perceived as an exclusive neighborhood, home to mansions known as Millionaire’s Row. Later, some of these neighborhoods fell into disrepair as residents were affected by economic slowdowns. In the mid-20th century, affordable apartment units came into demand, prompting the demolition of many of Capitol Hill’s older homes and the construction of hi-rise buildings.

Today, the region is experiencing the benefits of a renovation movement that began in the 1970s. Historic homes and structures have been revitalized and community groups have been established to protect the history and culture of these neighborhoods.

The lifestyle of Capitol Hill is pedestrian-friendly and convenient, as small commercial and retail districts are interspersed among residential neighborhoods. Some of Denver’s most unique attractions are also located here, including the Crawford Hill Mansion, Vance Kirkland Museum, Fillmore Auditorium, Bluebird Theater and Ogden Theater.

Capitol Hill’s main community events are The Capitol Hill People’s Fair, The Victorian House Tour and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. The People’s Fair is a huge attraction, bringing in over 250,000 people to celebrate Capitol Hill’s culture and lifestyle. The local neighborhood association, Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods (CHUN) also organizes community picnics, tree plantings, community clean-up programs and other activities.
